The Opening of the Mirage in 1989

When in 1989 The Mirage Casino opened its doors, 30.000 people flocked through its gates to see what all the buzz was about. The resort, that had cost $630 million, did not disappoint. At all.

Steve Wynn had formed a team under his wing which went above and beyond to create the most lavish, integrated megaresort the Las Vegas Strip, and the world for that matter, had ever seen. The resort from day 1 proved its investment thesis: a $1 million profit per day meant another record breaking figure.

Today, The Mirage is being ripped apart. Hard Rock International, which acquired the property in 2017, has begun demolishing the volcano and jungle in front and will soon start a reconstruction process of 3 years with the aim to launch a Guitar Hotel in its place.

Just before the Mirage was closed in July 2024, TheLasVegasBook director Joris Dekkers went with his camera team to film some shots and pay tribute to this unforgettable property.
